Accident Reconstruction

This is the classification of information gathered in any accident scenario. The vehicle section divides the information into three main crash phases and applies analysis to three groups of factors. Namely the Pre-crash, Crash and Post-crash phases of the accident where the Human, Vehicle and Ambient factors (which includes the highway system) are examined. This multidisciplinary approach results in data being gathered to identify the cause of the accident, the cause of the injury, the preventability of the accident and the preventability of the injury. Therefore the format is effective in personal liability and product liability or crashworthy analysis. The application may be as broad or as narrow as necessary depending upon the focus of the analysis.

Support for the Reconstruction Analysis may entail mechanical examinations, mathematical speed analysis, computer analysis and animations of the event. The vehicle and scene information are documented in a manner that others may utilize the data.

This starts with obtaining the vehicle specifications from different sources. Then the US DOT information is queried from our personal library and from the available data banks. This includes recalls, consumer complaints, service bulletins, and crash tests that may be available. Examination of the vehicle can be performed which would include vehicle examination and photographic documentation of measurements to establish the crush profile, component interaction analysis to determine the safety performance of the occupant protection systems, and mechanical examination to determine if there was any pre crash mechanical failures which precipitated the accident. Documentation and analysis of the interior would include analysis of the various thermal plastic transfers created during the crash. This may allow the determination of the seating positions of occupants and for instance, "who was driving" if that is an issue. In the event of a rollover, the vehicle exterior may be ‘mapped’ to determine the number of rolls and the general orientation of the vehicle during the roll. Classification of this information then becomes part of the multidisciplinary format for analysis of the accident event.
